Happy New Year! - Menu January 4th

So here we are - I am sure a lot of people may be saying this - New year , new decade, new start, and why not? 2010 is going to be a big year, not just for Kaffeine, but for specialty coffee industry in London, especially with the World Barista Championships in June.

Christmas Hours

Hello and Merry Christmas to all,
I am sorry it is a bit late, but this is just so that we are all aware of our Christmas hours over the festive period. Like most other good, independant cafes in London, we are closed over the Christmas New Year period for a well deserved break.

If you are looking for a hit of caffeine over this time, I suggest Flat White in Berwick Street.

Thursday 24th closed all the way through to the 4th of January.

January 4th we're open with usual hours.

7.30 am to 6 pm

Week beginning December 7th

Mince Pies? Italian style Pan Forte? Simply amazing chocolate rum balls? It's all about Christmas over the next 2 and a half weeks as we get into the festive spirit (we are always in good spirits at Kaffeine, why wouldn't we be?), but now we are getting festive, and perhaps a bit silly on occasions too, who knows....

November 30th - oh forget it, lets call it December

Three weeks Three weeks!! (and a half) until Christmas. What does that mean, cold weather of course, but even better, it means a lovely warm cafe (respect to all those market coffee stalls out there brrrrr), the windows all steam up and the smell of fresh ground coffee is mingling with fresh baked Christmas tarts, or Panforte, or banana bread, or our famous super moist chocolate brownies.

Remember that we can do large orders if required, a tray of brownies perhaps? Perfect for a Christmas party, or if you wish to make a lovely present to someone, how about a jar of carrot and lemon marmalade.

Week of November 16th

It seems that word is spreading for our baked sweet treats as well as our coffee. Time out have twittered this week that our Portuguese tarts are 'amazing' and they have even added us in their updated cafes of London list as one of the best looking coffee shops out there.
The kind people at Qype came in on Friday to celebrate one of theirs leaving and bought a shed load of cakes and twittered their hearts away on Friday night about how good they were.
This is all really appreciated, but what is appreciated even more is the lovely people who come in every day and support us, a small independent cafe in Central London trying to give people, quite simply, really really really good coffee and food. For that we thank you.

For those who follow us on Twitter, you know we try to keep you updated with what is happening with the food that is coming out of the kitchen at certain times of the day so that you know what's cooking. It is also a real pleasure when customers come in and say ' wow, this place smells amazing! What is it?' Then we have to decide whether it is the brownies, the organic porridge, the muffins, the cookies, the salad ingredients or perhaps the bacon for the wonderful bacon rolls we now have, or is it just that we have opened another bucket of Square Mile coffee? I wonder.....

It's all good really, however, if someone could just invent smellatwit we would be able to 'tweet' the smells of the kitchen to you as well. Anyway, will have to just keep tweeting photos......

As we get into the colder months now, we have started with organic porridge in the mornings with condiments to top it up with including dark muscovado sugar, dried fruit, chopped nuts and honey. Then at lunchtimes we have wonderful soups served with a piece of crusty bread to warm the cockles. It is dark by 5.00 p.m., so the cafe takes on a new look withe the exposed brick walls and the lighting creating a really nice ambience.

Saturdays are proving perfect for catching up with friends or just coming in and reading the papers, have a coffee or two and escaping from reality. Saturdays, perfect for a shot of Kaffeine.

Jams for sale:
Our amazing secret recipe marmalade is now for sale to take home and not only that, but you can have red fruit jam or damson plum and baby kiwi jam as well. This week we have added my own favorite, fig jam. Yum. Ask us in store.

Menu October 26th - halloweeeeeeennnnnn!

This week is of course the famous halloween. We have not gone too overboard, just the occasional ghost appearing on our muffins if you look closely enough. However, we are also excited because it is fig, chestnut and walnut season, as well as Aubergines being 'in' at the moment, so Jared has created a wonderful menu to showcase these seasonal ingredients. Our Coffee Philosphy

Our Coffee Philosophy
At Kaffeine we have taken a lot of time and effort to perfect our coffee in order to provide you with the perfect cup, each and every time. Below are the standards that we work to. If you ever feel that your coffee does not meet these standards, please do tell us.

Espresso Machine
We use the Synesso Cyncra espresso machine. Known as the holy grail of espresso machines, it is designed by former La Marzocco engineer Mark Barnett. The Synesso raises the bar on espresso machine design by an order of magnitude not known before. Ask us about it.

Grinder
We use an Anfim Super Caimano grinder. Based in Milan, Italy, Anfim have been making coffee grinders for 50 years. All their products are hand-finished, reflecting their philosophy that a quality grinder is at the heart of a good coffee. Each coffee is ground to order, ensuring absolute freshness in the cup.

Beans
Square Mile coffee is owned by the 2007 world barista champion, James Hoffman and the 2007 world cupping champion, Anette Moldvaer. They have a reputation for being one of the best coffee roasting companies in the world.

Cup Sizes
We have specifically chosen these cup sizes to reflect and respect the true flavours of the coffee. All our coffees are served as a double shot as a standard; that is approximately 50mls of espresso in each drink.
· Flat whites and Long Blacks are served in a 6 oz cup
· Cafe Latte are served in 7.7 oz glass
· Cappuccino, Americanos and Hot Chocolates are served in an 8 oz cup
Take away drinks are all served in the same above volumes but in an 8 oz cup

Baristas
Our Baristas have at least three continuous years experience behind a professional espresso machine. They are continuously in pursuit of perfecting the art of espresso making.

Milk
We only ever use absolutely fresh, organic milk. We are using Bonsoy milk for soy drinkers.

Cleanliness
Our machines, grinders and the surrounding work areas are always kept impeccably clean.

Taste
We drink and check the taste of our coffee ourselves. All the time.

This week Kaffeine has a new arrival. Estelle Bright, who placed second in the UK for latte art in the championships this year, has moved down from Bristol and is joining the team. Estelle is originally from Wales and apart from the fact that the last three world champions have come from the UK, is another example that not just Australians and New Zealanders make great coffee. We are very proud and happy that Estelle will be with us.

Our menu is developing into the Autumn wonderfulness of root vegetables and as soon as the correct equipment arrives, we will be doing porridge in the mornings and soups in the afternoons. Follow us on Twitter and we will let you know as soon as it happens.

This week we are very happy, as always, as Jared has created another menu with a few new additions to bring out the Autumnal produce including Damson Jam slices. Only in season for a month, these are lovely blue black little plums that have a wonderful sweet flavour, just right on a shortbread slice covered with crushed almonds and even better as a sweet muffin.

We are also very excited as we have Mattias Bjorklund, Swedish barista champion working with us one day a week, and Estelle Bright, who is moving from Bristol down to London, starting with us in two weeks time. Estelle is originally from Wales and came second in the UK latte art championships last year, we are honoured that Estelle has chosen to work with us.

However, we are also looking for a commis chef to assist Jared in the kitchen. If you are someone or you know someone who loves baking and making wonderful salads, please get in touch.

Weekly Menu October 5th

Waking up in the mornings is never easy, especially at 5.45 am when it is dark outside. But then by the time I get to Oxford Circus, the sun is just coming up and the light is that lovely soft shade and I walk the quiet streets up into what we call Titchfield village to Kaffeine as everything is just getting started on another day in one of the greatest cities of the world.

Jared is already downstairs baking the muffins, banana bread, friands and cinnamon and raisin toast and then Catherine arrives, pours the beans into the grinder, checks the dose and extractions and the smell of coffee permeates throughout the cafe. Could it be any better?

If you are around early in the mornings, or fancy getting up a bit earlier and coming in for a peaceful coffee and breakfast, then join us, your day will not get a better start. Guaranteed.

The lovely Autumn mornings are inspiring us to create more and more options for our menu, so we are testing and trying different cakes, slices and muffins as well as making more salads each day, as they are selling very quickly.

Weekly Menu 21st September

Our menu, while having some of our favourites on all the time, will also change weekly depending on what the markets are providing to us and what Jarrod, or amazing Chef, has in his mind to make that week.
Each morning we start with the smell of fresh ground coffee, then to the smell of our sweet and savoury muffins, then banana bread baking and when the cinnamon and raisin toast gets on the grill, the cafe is full of the smell of lovely lovely food, just the way the world should be.

Kaffeine is open

It has taken two years of planning, a lot of heartache, blood, sweat and tears and time and effort, but finally we are open for business at 66 Great Titchfield street.

We are very proud of what we are doing and very passionate about providing our patch of London with a space that is fresh, open, inviting and filled with the wonderful aromas of coffee and baked goods including muffins, friands, banana breads as well as fresh, healthy salads, sandwiches and foccacias. Our menu changes weekly, following the seasons as our suppliers tell us what is good in the markets and what is at its freshest and we then combine that to make tasty, healthy food options that cater for everybody.

We are open Monday to Friday from 7.30 am to 6 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm and we are only 3 minutes walk from Oxford street tube station so very easy to come up and have a coffee in what is known amongst the locals as Great Titchfield Village.

Our coffee comes from the wonderful people at Square Mile coffee, big shout to James and Anette for all their support and encouragement, our machine is a brand new Synesso Cyncra PID controlled stainless steel mirror finish rolls royce of coffee machines. Producing sweet cup after cup of espresso we are very proud of it and will be more than happy to talk about it for hours on end if you want us to.

Coffee is such an amazing product and has so many variants, idiosyncrasies and nuances and has such a huge potential to really take off in London as a product that is to be respected, but it is also the cafe culture that we so enjoy in Australia and New Zealand, that creation of a community where people can come and go and feel relaxed, comfortable that we want to achieve at Kaffeine. Autumn Blend hits Great Titchfield street

Ah, the moment we have been waiting for, not the last of the summer wine, but the last of the summer blend. This is not in a bad way, because since we opened on August 14th we have loved the Summer blend as have our customers, but with the change of seaosns comes the opportunity to try something different and get that warm fuzzy feleing, just like putting on a jumper you have not worn for six months and just going hmmmmmmmm.

Square Mile promise a sweet tasting blend for Autumn, not as sweet as Summer, but still full of caramel, chocolate, toasted hazelnuts and a fresh raspberry flavour in the finish. We are getting a lot of chocolate and caramel especially in the ristrettos when dosed at about 22 grams and a real velvet pyjama covering on the tongue, even our soy flat white drinkers are getting chocolate!

On the synesso machine it comes through very bright and clean, just as it should be with respect to the time and effort that has gone into producing this wonderful blend.

We are already looking forward to colder days when the cafe will be warm, cozy and the smell of our freshly baked banana breads, muffins and friands is coming up the stairs and the Autumn espressos is warming our hearts.
