Week beginning March 28th - Lamingtons and Villa Loyola

I missed a week, not very good really and apologies to those who are kind enough to follow us each week. No excuses, it will not happen again.

So, moving on !!

There is so much good news this week, we are very happy indeed.

John Gordon from Square Mile Coffee has won the UK Barista Championship once again and will be representing the UK in the World Championships in June this year in Columbia. Well done John and SQM team.

SQM have also been kind enough to supply us with an amazing single origin coffee. Villa Loyola, a Columbian Cup of Excellence winner that SQM took recently to serve at the TED conference in LA, has arrived. We have only 200 kilos of this beautiful coffee. Our baristas Catherine, Justin, Amy and Krysty are loving it, beautiful to work with, incredible flavour profile. Get in and have some.

Lamingtons. Back on for three days only at the end of this week. Yes, that must also mean it's payday for a lot of you. What could be better? We sold 80 of them in 2 and a half days last month. If you want to preorder a large quantity, please email me.

Week beginning March 14th - Lovely food and Guest Single Origin coffee

Chef Jared has taken our food offer one step further this week and is making his own pumperknickel bread with will then be sliced, toasted and topped with a lime cream cheese, watercress, smoked salmon, cucumber ribbons and red basil cress.

This we serve with our choices of salads, which this week include either fennnel, prunes, chicory, feta, coriander and mustard dressing, or roasted jerusalem artichokes or broccoli with chimichurri dressing.

Just knowing that in his head that all these flavours will work, then putting them together and creating dishes that are colourful, tasty and healthy is such a joy to see.

Finish this off with a poached rhubarb sweet muffin and you could not be happier really.

I am also excited this weke because Square Mile Coffee have given us the opportunity to have a guest siingle origin espresso for the next four weeks. Just being able to say to Anette and James 'yes, I'll have 200 kilos please', was exciting enough. This is the Villa Loyola espresso blend and we are the only cafe to be serving it. It will also be available as a retail bags of 350 grams in store.

We free trialled this coffee with some of our regular customers a few weeks ago and the feedback was fantastic. It is also the coffee that SQM served at the recent TED conference as part of Coffee Common. Exciting stuff indeed, look out for its release date next week sometime.

Week Beginning March 7th - Earthquake Appeal week

This week we are collecting money in two ways for the earthquake appeal. Firstly the 'staff tip jar' is being used at the front counter if you wish to drop in small change. Secondly, on Wednesday Kaffeine will donate 50 p of every coffee sold to the appeal.

But, it is how we will donate this money that is the interesting part. Carl Sara, NZ Barista Champion and a few others including Lawrence Brown and Steve Leighton here in the UK have set up www.christchurchcafe.com. This is where you can buy coffee beans and equipment and even a coffee machine in a virtual world, and all proceeds goes directly to those affected by the earthquake who work in the coffee community in Christchurch.

This is a brilliant idea and it is amazing that coffee people over the world are able to come togther and donate and support others in this way.

So we hope to be able to buy two coffee machines at least, plus some beans to use them on.

See you in store and thank you for your time.

Week beginning February 28th - Oscars, Earthquake, Emma, Cafe Society awards

This week is sad week but it is also a week of celebration. I tell you, the emotions of running a cafe....unbelievable.

Emma - So we no longer have our Emma, she has left to have her baby hopefully on or before March 16th. We had a fab day on Friday as her last day with presents and gifts from customers and a tearful farwell at the end. We really wish her and partner Ian all the very best for the future.

Earthquake - The disaster in Christchurch is terrible, we cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like over there. Luckily for us there is no-one we know who has been badly affected, but the town will take a long time to come back from this. Thank you to all who have asked about our friends and family. Kaffeine will be organising a fundraiser soon like we did for the floods in Queensland.

Oscar Winners - We also would like to congratulate the boys and girls at Double Negative, who came home winners at the Oscars on Sunday for Special Visual Effects for Inception. Considering we supplied them with enough caffeine over the production period to sink a ship, we feel that we had at least a small part to play in this and we are very proud and happy for them. Well done.

Best Independent cafe Awards - Kaffeine has also been shortlisted for an award, this time the Cafe Society Best Independent Cafe 2010. Winners will be announced on March 22nd. We feel priviledged to be a part of it and to be shortlisted at all. Fingers crossed.

So, we hope you enjoy the week ahead. We will be.....
